| Furosemide oral solution
Strength: 1 mg/ml.
Quantity: 100 ml.
Materials:
Furosemide injection (lasix) 10 mg/ml …………………10 ml Sorbitol 70 %................................................. ..................70 ml Preserved water to…………………………………….100 ml Sodium hydroxide 0.1N (for pH adjustment)………….q.s Hydrochloric acid 0.1N (for pH adjustment)………..q.s
Procedure: 1- Draw 10 ml of furosemide injection using filter needle. 2- Add furosemide solution to the sorbitol solution. 3- Adjust the ph with sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid using pH-meter[1]. 4- Complete the volume with preserved water to 100 ml.

Comment:
0.1N sodium hydroxide contains 400 mg sodium hydroxide in 100 ml of water.
Do not use either the injection or the compounded solution if there is any coloration.
Furosemide is antihypertensive loop diuretic used in management of edema associated with CHF, and hepatic or renal disease. It is used alone or in combination with antihypertensive in treatment of hypertension.
Usual pediatric dose: Neonate (bioavailability is poor via oral route): 1-4 mg/kg/day divided twice daily. Infants and children: 1-6 mg/kg/day every 6-12 hours. [1] Start with 0. 2 ml; check for pH and add about 0. 3 ml and check again ( about 0.5 mlneeded for each 100 ml of solution | |
