Colchicine, the active compound in Colchicum, is one of the ingredients of ColBENEMID, a prescription medication for gout. Researchers do not know how Colchicine works, but it has proven effective both for relieving the pain of acute gout flare-ups and for reducing the frequency of attacks.

Colchicum takes its name from Colchis, the area in which the mythical witch Medea pursued her poisonous ways. The plant's flowers, seeds, and tubers are all medicinal, but are rarely used due to the danger of poisoning.

Special Cautions

To avoid toxic effects, take Colchicum only at recommended dosage levels and for limited periods of time. Long-term use can cause kidney and liver damage, hair loss, nerve inflammation, muscle diseases, and bone marrow damage

Typical Dosage

For an acute attack of gout, take an initial oral dose *****alent to 1 milligram of Colchicine, followed by 0.5 to 1.5 milligrams every 1 to 2 hours until the pain subsides. Do not exceed 8 milligrams of Colchicine per day and take no additional doses for at least 3 days

Overdosage

For adults, a dose of only 5 grams of Colchicum seeds can prove fatal. For a child, the lethal dose is 1 to 1.5 grams. A mere 200 milligrams of the active ingredient Colchicine is sufficient to cause death.

The first signs of poisoning appear 3 to 6 hours after intake of a toxic amount, when the victim develops a burning feeling in his mouth, has difficulty swallowing, and begins to experience intense thirst. After 12 to 14 hours, nausea and vomiting set in, accompanied by severe stomach pains, diarrhea, bladder spasms, blood in the urine, a fall in blood pressure, and, eventually, progressive paralysis. Death follows from exhaustion, asphyxiation, and circulatory collapse.
