Phenobarbital sodium elixir

Materials:
Phenobarbital sodium 400 ml
Glycerol 45 ml
Alcohol 15 ml.
Orange oil 0.075 ml
Caramel 200 mg
Syrup 15 ml.
Dilute hydrochloric acid 0.6 ml.
Water to 100 ml

Procedure:
Dissolution and mixing.
Add the hydrochloric acid to the final solution.

Comment:
Used as hypnotic, antiepileptic.
This formula contains 20mg/5 ml.
Protect from light.
The B.P. and B.N.F. formulais:
Phenobarbitone 300 mg., orange spirit 2.4 ml., compound tartrazine solution 1 ml., alcohol 90 % 40 ml., glycerol 40 ml., water to 100 ml. protect from light. It contains 15 mg/5ml.)
Phenobarbitone mixture for infants: (Ind. N.F.)
Phenobarbitone sodium 300 mg., aromatic cardamom tincture 5 ml., orange syrup 10 ml., water to 100 ml.

Alcohol is serve as preservative and could be substituted.
Dilute hydrochlotic acid used here to adjust the pH of the solution to about 7-9. It contains 7 %w/w (Aust.), 12.5 % w/w (Ger.), and 8.3 %w/w (Rus.).
